Jemisin (start with The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms) and The Last Herald Mage, by Mercedes Lackey (start with Magic's Pawn): Both of these series come highly recommended but aren't classified as YA. I would not recomend "Phoenix and the ashes" as a first book. I have already read the Eragon series (waiting on the last book) The Sword of truth series, The Harry Potter series, the dark tower series and lord of rings.
